The credit for directing goes to Martin Scorsese, but it appears that he's responsible especially for editing source footage and some contemporary interviews. Don’t wanna be mean, diminish his work or something, it’s just a thought that crossed my mind: if he'd had more input, there would probably been a couple of bloody mafia bits/hits included :))
But seriously (this is an album’s title, just check Phil Collins discography), the actual footage of the performances and tour coverage are the pulsatile core of the film.
I never was a great fan of Dylan’s voice (or the harmonica), though I’ve always considered him a great song writer. But here Dylan's performances from this tour have totally converted me. What a strong stage presence, and delivery, a total pro. He shows the spectacular voice control and phrasing he had acquired by that time of his career. I now feel his reputation is completely deserved and these performances absolutely prove it.
And Sharon… The Beauty Queen.
